On October 6th, 2012 Boy Scouts from the Old Trail District Troops 16, 40, and 45 (and a guest from pack 115) came to Walnut Ridge to earn their forestry merit badge. Brian Gandy, an accredited independent forester, worked with the scouts and adults teaching them proper forest management, identification of trees, shrubs and vines, proper care and safety when logging and felling trees, impacts of forestry on our economy and ecology, and finally employment opportunities in the forestry industry. Mr. Gandy did an outstanding job teaching the concepts, took them on a nature hike to experience and discuss what they learned, and then returned to re-discuss and evaluate what they learned. The boys worked hard and had a great time. We even took a break for some hot dogs and beans. Photos from the event are on our Facebook page. Thanks to all who made this possible for the scouts!
